Canon Digital Rebel XSi - Review

Weighing in at 16.8 ounces and measuring 5.2 x 2.4 x 3.9 inches, the Canon Digital Rebel XSi which is available in either silver or plain black is considered to be an entry level camera. While one certainly cannot argue that the camera has a good grip, some people to feel the casing looks cheap.

While one certainly cannot argue that the camera has a good grip, some people to feel the casing looks cheap. Of course, others argue that this is simply because of the smooth surface looking as though it's been made from plastic. Overall, the camera doesn't feel quite as comfortable in your hands when compared to the vast majority of other cameras. It is also worth noting that previous Canon digital cameras never had the same 3 inch screen as this model. You'll also notice that the controls are situated on the right hand side of the screen.

Consumers like the click of the XSi buttons and the playback images that have a good appearance. This must be due to the resolution of the sensor being higher. As you zoom in 10x there is a slight wait before displays and loads of images.

Viewing the screen from above, below, or even the sides, doesn't seem to be a problem even when the camera is held overhead. Both the vertical and horizontal viewing angles are Approximately 160 to 170 degrees.

Image quality equation is a mere on the Canon. A kit lens is given and it is very lightweight and neat for a lens that is stabilized. A screen at the rear means it's easy to take settings quickly. The ISO value in the viewfinder is constantly displayed. On top of the major LCD screen there is a detached status screen. Unlike the older version there is no top screen.

While most users would agree that the color reproduction and macros are excellent and that the camera is incredibly fast, some users tend to feel that the camera has difficulty with regards to auto-focus. It seems that the biggest complaint is that the camera is often unable to select the correct point of focus. However, total for accuracy is almost impossible when one utilizes the center focus. Unfortunately though, the end result often remains the same, in that photos come out fuzzy. Of course, not all users seem to have this complaint.

Of course, one also needs to take into consideration that some consumers may very well be under the wrong impression in that they believe that the "live view" allows for them to utilize the camera in the same way as they you would utilize a regular point and shoot digital camera. Instead, the "live view" feature still requires an even surface or a tripod. To Then again, some people have mentioned that using either of the two "live view" modes tends to be to draw out with regards to hand held shots.

Even though the camera does have room for improvement, the fact remains, it is an adequate camera none the less and in the majority of cases, buyers have been happy with the quality and also the features. Furthermore, it appears that many people are also very pleased with the ergonomic of the Canon Digital Rebel XSI.

Ever since I bought the Canon Digital Rebel XTi I've been having people telling me what great pictures I take and asking me how I became such a great photographer. This only goes to show that biggest part of taking great photos is having great equipment and this camera is definitely great equipment.

One of the things I really like about the camera is how flexible it is. I can take great "point & click" pictures with the presets that it includes but I can also take it to the next level with the manual settings (when you learn how to use the manual settings you'll take much better photos with them.) As great as the pictures I get with manual settings are, sometimes I just want to snap some quick photos and let me tell you, there's a huge difference between the results of these "snapshots" and those taken with a normal point & click camera.

An important thing to realize is that the megapixel count isn't nearly as important as the lens. You can get a cheaper point & click camera with that has a huge megapixel count but which takes poor photos. The key to this camera's great pictures isn't it's high megapixel count but it's great lens!

Another really great thing about this camera is that unlike the usual point and click camera, which I used before, you can actually take pictures very quickly. You know how you have to wait that moment before the photo is actually taken with a point & click digital camera? You won't have that problem with this camera, it takes the picture instantly. When taking action shots that can make a huge difference in your results.

Compact point and shoot cameras can only bring you that far when it comes to the quality of a photo. For greater control over the shots taken, many resort to digital SLR cameras. Here is a quick review of one of my favorites from canon, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera.

Professional (as well as aspiring professionals) photographers usually resort to single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras for greater control over the manual configurations. SLR cameras enable photographers to have almost complete control over the modes, features and configurations of their cameras to produce the best shot possible.

One of my all time favorite SLR cameras is the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera. This new model, with a wide range of features, many of which previously only in high-end products. Here is a quick look at why the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera is a winner.

This model has a powerful 15.1MP sensor. This high resolution (together with the DIGIC 4 processor) enables the accurate and natural reproduction of colors on the picture taken. The 18-55mm lens that is included with this model does a pretty good job, but on high resolution, the 15.1MP sensor works best with the EF 70-200mm and other similar lenses.

Regardless of the camera, I am always very appreciative of a huge display. The Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera has a large 3" display that works like a dream. The surface of the display is anti-reflective, displaying crisp previews even under bright sunlight and dark lighting conditions (it has level of brightness adjustments).

This model is surprisingly light and feels pretty good on my grip. It has the same casing as the XSi model and is a little smaller compared to many other SLR cameras. The buttons are well placed and Canon camera users will have little trouble getting used to this model. This camera also records HD videos and can be easily connected to other devices (it comes with a HDMI port).

Canon Digital Rebel - Which One to Choose - XSi, T1i or X1i

This is a decision that can drive you nuts when you start researching camera sites and forums. You can quickly eliminate the Canon Rebel X1i because it does not exist... yet. Perhaps Canon will come out with that version soon. There is no rhyme or reason to why these names show up.




Canon Digital Rebel - Which One to Choose - XSi, T1i or X1i

There is, however, a kind of progression in the Rebel numbers. The first Canon Rebel was the 300D, then came the 350D, 400D, 450D, 1000D, and finally the 500D. No clue how a camera with the number 1000D got in there. It has not been hugely popular, so maybe the inconsistent number has something to do with that. The most popular of the Canon Rebels are the XSi and the T1i. And both are awesome pieces of photographic equipment.

The Rebel series has historically been popular among two groups of people.

Group 1 - new DSLR buyers. That is, those folks who are moving from a point and shoot camera to their very first DSLR camera.

Group 2 - current Rebel owners. It is amazing to see how many Rebel owners buy the newest Canon Rebel Release. Sometimes they will skip one, but there is a group of folks who are loyal to the Rebel line.

And for good reason. The Canon Rebel has been excellent at every release. Canon has consistently raised their technology standards with each new camera, and buyers have been extremely happy with their purchases. That goes a long way toward getting Canon the reputation that sells cameras and makes them one of the two top DSLR manufacturers, the other being Nikon.

OK, so what about the Canon Rebel XSi vs the Canon Rebel T1i? As already mentioned, both are great cameras that are well liked by those who have purchased them. In a comparison of image quality, it would be difficult for the average person to see any differences in the prints from the two cameras side by side. You may even need some coaching to find any at all. Thus, both are capable of almost identical image quality. The Canon T1i will produce a slightly larger image because it has almost 3 megapixels more capacity than the XSi, but at the 12-15 megapixel size, this becomes a non-issue (unless you are a megapixel prude).

Some other improvements on the Canon Rebel T1i include:

• Extended ISO range up to ISO 12800
• HD video capability
• New 3.0 inch 920K pixels screen
• Creative Auto
• Face Detection in Live View
• Larger buffer in continuous shooting
• Digic 4 style menu design

Of those differences, the ones that might be of most note to a first time DSLR buyer are:

1. HD video capability - if you are moving up from a compact digital camera, you will be used to having video capability. But be aware that this camera is not a camcorder. While it has excellent video recording, there are two things that you need to know. First, there is no stereo sound or mic input. Second, the length of recording is quite a bit shorter than a dedicated camcorder.
2. 3" LCD with 920K pixel resolution. This is quite a big improvement in the ability to see the screen in bright light. The XSi output is only 230K pixels.
3. Creative Auto - this set of features lets the photographer tell the camera what conditions he is shooting in and what he wants the output to be. Basically, Canon says that Creative Auto will allow you to learn DSLR photography while still getting excellent photos during the learning process.
4. Face Detection in Live View - this is a new feature to many DSLRs which is quite common in point and shoot cameras. It can be an added bonus if you are used to having it.I think that both cameras would be a fantastic fit for anyone except the extreme amateur or the professional photographer.

Every camera in the Digital Rebel series has given its owners fantastic images. Mine certainly did. And these two cameras are no different. Both are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Given the above information, why wouldn't you just go get a Canon Rebel T1i? The answer is COST. The Rebel XSi is about $150 less than its younger sibling. So if you think the improvements are enough for you to shell out another $150, then the Canon Rebel T1i is the right choice. If those features are not as important to you as the ability to take great still photos and change lenses when you want to change output, then the Canon Rebel XSi is the right choice.

Hopefully you are better informed now than you were. Buying a new camera has always been an exciting venture for me. There are so many techy options and features that the pro reviewers look at. But in my opinion, it all boils down to this - will the camera do what you want it to do.
